At Medical Charities of Tennessee (MCT), our mission is to provide essential medical care and support to the Mayan populations in the highlands of Guatemala. We are driven by a deep sense of compassion and service. Our dedicated team is committed to making a lasting impact on the lives of the individuals we serve by addressing healthcare needs and promoting overall well-being. As we work towards our mission, we envision a Guatemala where every person has the opportunity to lead a healthy and fulfilling life. Together with our donors, volunteers, and partners, we aspire to create a positive impact on the health landscape of Guatemala and inspire hope for a brighter and healthier future.

Our Beginning

After living in Guatemala as a young man. Ammon Smartt returned 20 years later with a desire to improve the lives of his friends in Guatemala. A long-time friend, Dr. Geoffrey Lifferth, offered to provide his medical expertise on MCT's first trip to Guatemala in 2013. Geoff and Ammon have returned every year since, partnering with local medical professionals and clinics to ensure continuity and quality of care. In addition, MCT seeks to provide training, medicine, and medical supplies to the clinics we work with to ensure patients receive the medical care they need throughout the year.

Geoff currently serves as MCT's Medical Director. In 2018, Dr. Ronald Buchheit joined MCT and has played a pivotal role in furthering our mission. We are grateful to Dr. Lifferth and Dr. Buchheit for their leadership. We are also grateful to the many volunteers who make our work possible.
